Hungry for History: Mound Builders

June 24, 2021

May be an image of one or more people and text that says 'Cockayne Farmstead's Hungry for History Summer Speaker Series'

How did the indigenous people who built the burial mound behind the Cockayne farmhouse live? Who were they and when did they build it? Unfortunately, we are not entirely sure who built the Cockayne Mound (46MR26) or even when it was made. The archeological survey conducted in 2005 determined that the mound was man-made but they were not able to conclude if it is from the Archaic (8000BC-1000BC) or Woodland (1000BC-1600AD) period because they found nothing to use for carbon-dating. Thus, this lecture will focus on the similarities and differences of the two periods. Attendees will also get the opportunity to build their own mini-mound with baskets similar to what the indigenous builders would have used! Topics that will be discussed include: artifacts in our collection, indigenous culture, and much more!
