Cockayne At Glen Dale

To celebrate St. Valentine’s Day, we’ve displayed some of the antique Valentines from our collection throughout the North Parlor for the month of February. There are some fascinating and very intricate cards, along with some adorable school Valentines given to Sam and John Cockayne as children. Come see them for yourself!

Some history of the Grave Creek Mound Archaeological Complex as well!

This is a picture showing the Mound in Moundsville as it looked in 1959. There was originally a block of houses between the Mound and the Penitentiary, as well as a half block of houses between the Mound and Central Elementary. Cars could literally drive around the base, and many did just that to look at the beautiful Christmas light displays every December. In 1977, the block and a half of homes were demolished to make way for the new Delf Norona museum and parking lot. The streets were removed on two sides of the Mound, and a grassy area planted where the homes had been in front of Central school.
