Selma: The Bridge to the Ballot
This documentary features the words of Alabama students and teachers who marched from Selma to Montgomery to fight for voting rights regardless of race. Historic film footage documents how they faced a violent sheriff and a defiant governor, along with intimidation, arrest and murder. Pivotal events of this movement took place on the Edmund Pettus Bridge where the marchers were confronted by a police blockade. By this time, the ranks of the protestors included clergy and others of all races under the leadership of the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. National outrage over the treatment of these people helped lead to the passage of the Voting Rights Act of 1965.
This film is part of the “Teaching Tolerance” series produced by the Southern Poverty Law Center.
This event is FREE and open to the public.
