Roseby’s Rock Presentation
April 18, 2016 @ 6:00 pm - 9:00 pmFree
Ed Yelochan will discuss the history of Rosbys Rock. Located about seven miles southeast of Moundsville , the massive sandstone boulder marks the spot near where, on Christmas Eve, 1852, the last spike was driven to complete the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad from Baltimore to the Ohio Valley. There was a big celebration in Wheeling to commemorate the completion of the railroad and the arrival of the first train. To mark the spot where the final spike was driven these words were carved upon the rock: “Rosbbys [sic] Rock Track Closed Christmas Eve 1852.” (e-WV)
Ed Yelochan, is a retired (2014) professional medical care provider (physician assistant). He worked for the Veterans Health Administration for 20 years. He has a BA in history from University of Baltimore in 1995. The final class he took was held at the B&O Railroad Museum in Baltimore. There was a large black and white photo of Rosbys Rock. He quizzed the professor about it, and was hooked. He first visited the rock in 1999 and has done extensive research, which he is here to present for you on April 19 at noon.
