In 1901, when miners in West Virginia began organizing to join a union, coal was the engine that fueled American industrial progress in locomotives, factories, steam ships, electric power plants, and home furnaces. A decades-long struggle between capital and labor turned the coalfields of West Virginia into a war zone where basic constitutional rights and freedoms were violently contested.
