“From Fairchance to Santa Barbara: A Shared Experience” by Bruce M. Rothschild, MD
As people migrate, they bring with them their language, culture.. and their diseases. Dr. Rothschild examins yaws, a disfiguring illness that exists today. Archaeological evidence indicates that prehistoric Native Americans suffered from this disease, and tracing the patters of how and where the disease was transmitted can show how these different populations interacted. Cases from the Fairchance site in West Virginia and the Santa Barbara Channel area in southern California will be discussed.
