Film – “Time Team America: New Philadelphia, IL”(56 min)

The team is challenged to find remnants of New Philadelphia, the first American town founded by former slaves. In 1836, ‘Free Frank’ McWorter purchased his freedom from a Kentucky plantation owner and headed north. He started New Philadelphia in Illinois and sold enough land to purchase freedom for the rest of his family. The team searches for the pre-Civil War schoolhouse where the town’s children learned to read and write. A PBS Production.
